As it grows, it creates work: writers, camera operators, editors, people covering the games and the meetings and the music. Our ranchers are important. Our university is important. Our construction workers are important. Our oil industry is important. Our progress is important. Our city infrastructure is important.

Those things get pitted against each other in every election and every comment section, as if you have to pick a side of town or a side of the economy. We don't buy it. A cattle operation and a lecture hall and a drilling crew and a bike lane can all be part of one honest city. The balance is the point. Greeley can be a beacon of what community and city bring each other when nobody gets written out of the story.

This place was laid out on a grid — streets and avenues, numbered and orderly, avenues counting up toward two hundred as the city reaches west. A grid doesn't rank its intersections. Every street matters to the streets it crosses. Every avenue carries somebody home.
